Flying private – level 3

22-05-2025 07:00

Flying private jets is very expensive and harmful to the environment. In one year, a renowned musician flew 396 times in their jet, with one flight lasting only six minutes.

Renting a jet costs between 7,500 and 17,000 dollars per hour, while buying one can cost up to 65 million dollars. Owners must also pay for fuel, crew, maintenance, and storage, which adds millions more each year. Private jets also produce much more CO2 than commercial flights. Although commercial planes emit a lot of carbon, they carry many people, so the emissions are shared. A private jet, with only a few passengers, emits 10 to 20 times more per person. Just the ten top US private fliers in 2023 caused more emissions than 6,500 people. To reduce emissions, scientists support using Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs). SAFs are made from waste or plants and pollute much less than fossil fuels. If rich private fliers started using them, they could help fund cheaper, cleaner air travel for everyone.

Difficult words: renowned (famous or well-known), maintenance (taking care of something regularly).

How does a private jet’s per-passenger CO₂ emission compare to that of a commercial flight, and what fuel alternative could wealthy jet users adopt to cut these emissions?
