Fuel from cooking oil – level 3
20-01-2025 15:00
Spain is leading efforts to make aviation more sustainable using biofuel derived from used cooking oil. This approach helps reduce environmental pollution and dependence on traditional fossil fuels.
Customers at gas stations in Madrid can exchange leftover frying oil for fuel vouchers, and the collected oil is refined into kerosene at advanced facilities. These refineries turn the oil into a product chemically identical to petroleum-based fuel, making it fully compatible with airplane engines. Airlines such as Iberia aim to fuel 10% of their planes with biofuel by 2030, aligning with EU targets for increasing sustainable aviation fuel usage to 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. While biofuel costs about three times as much as traditional fuel, expanding production facilities, like a major refinery under construction in Andalusia, will help reduce costs.
Tests by the German Aerospace Center reveal that planes running on biofuel emit fewer soot particles, resulting in fewer condensation trails which contribute to global warming. Spain’s efforts also include exploring other renewable raw materials to diversify sustainable fuel sources. These initiatives highlight the potential of waste, such as frying oil, to play a critical role in combating climate change.
Difficult words: derive (obtain something from a specified source), leftover (something remaining after the rest has been used, especially food), kerosene (a fuel used for airplanes), soot (a black powder produced when coal, wood, or other material is burned).
