Greenland women want justice from Denmark – level 3

11-03-2024 07:00

143 Indigenous women in Greenland are suing Denmark for implanting them with intrauterine devices in the 1960s and 1970s, seeking 5.8 million euros in compensation.

They allege that Danish authorities violated their human rights, fitting them with contraceptive coils without consent. Each woman demands 40,000 euros. The devices aimed to control population growth, but many women were unaware or didn’t consent to the procedure. Despite an ongoing investigation initiated by Denmark and Greenland in 2022, the women pursue justice through the court, citing urgency due to their advancing age.

This lawsuit adds to Denmark’s history of controversial actions in Greenland, including forced relocations and assimilation attempts.

Difficult words: intrauterine (inside the uterus), contraceptive coil (a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that a doctor puts into a womb to stop a woman from getting pregnant), assimilation (integrating people, ideas, or culture into a wider society or culture).
