Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz – level 3
20-02-2026 07:00
Iran announced the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz for live fire military drills during nuclear talks with the United States in Geneva.
The Strait is extremely important because about 20% of the world’s oil passes through it. Iranian forces reportedly fired missiles during the exercises, and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that even powerful armies can be seriously weakened. At the same time, the US increased its military presence in the region. Both sides say progress is possible, but there are still disagreements. The US wants strict limits on Iran’s nuclear program and asks Iran not to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says it wants a fair deal and will not accept threats.
Officials from both countries described the talks as constructive but cautious, with many details still unresolved. Diplomatic efforts continue, yet military pressure in the background increases tension and raises concerns about possible escalation in the region.
Difficult words: reportedly (according to what people say or news reports), disagreement (when people do not have the same opinion), threat (a promise to hurt someone or cause problems).
