Luis Rubiales trial – level 3
10-02-2025 07:00
Luis Rubiales, the former president of Spain’s football federation, is on trial for sexual assault after kissing player Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 Women’s World Cup celebrations.
While Rubiales claims the kiss was consensual, Hermoso has stated otherwise. He also faces a coercion charge for allegedly pressuring her to say she agreed to the kiss. Three of his former colleagues, including the team’s coach, are also on trial for coercion. At first, Rubiales refused to step down, calling the accusations a witch-hunt, but later resigned. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence.
This case has highlighted ongoing sexism in football, despite progress in women’s sports. For many, this trial represents a turning point in Spanish football. Hermoso’s supporters see it as an opportunity to challenge gender inequality in sports and society. The court proceedings have begun in Madrid and will continue until February 19.
Difficult words: consensual (agreed by both people), coercion (forcing someone to do something), witch-hunt (a campaign directed against a person or group), sexism (the belief that the members of one sex are less able, skillful, or intelligent).
