Meta’s smart glasses show too much – level 3

20-03-2026 07:00

Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses are at the center of a privacy scandal.

Over seven million people bought these glasses because they look like normal sunglasses but contain cameras and AI. However, a new investigation shows that human workers in Kenya often review private videos from the glasses.

These workers see very personal moments, such as people getting undressed or using credit cards. Although Meta says they blur faces to protect privacy, contractors confirm the system often fails. Many users don’t realize that strangers might watch their recordings to improve the AI technology. This situation is very uncomfortable for both users and people who are filmed without their permission.

Now, some countries are demanding more information from Meta about how they use this data. In the United States, users filed a lawsuit against the company for violating privacy laws. Meta says they only see footage when users share it, but experts warn that people lose control over their personal information once it enters the AI system.

Difficult words: scandal (a situation where many people are shocked or angry because someone did something wrong or dishonest), blur (a way to make a picture or a face difficult to see clearly, often used to hide a person’s identity), contractor (a person or company that does work for another company), violate (an action where someone breaks a rule, a law, or a person’s rights).

You can watch the video news lower on this page.

What demands have some countries made to Meta, and what legal action have U.S. users taken over the smart glasses?
