Music artists protest against AI – level 3

05-03-2025 07:00

More than 1,000 musicians, including Annie Lennox and Kate Bush, have released a silent album to protest against changes to UK copyright law.

The new rules would allow AI companies to use copyrighted content without permission unless the creators opt-out. Musicians fear this would damage their careers, as AI-generated music could replace real artists.

The silent album has 12 tracks with only studio noise, symbolizing what music could become if AI companies take control. Ed Newton-Rex, the founder of Fairly Trained, says the government is handing over artists’ work for free, which is unfair. He argues that current UK copyright law already protects musicians, so there is no need for a change.

Similar concerns exist in the US, where many lawsuits challenge the use of copyrighted material. Musicians and creative industries are united in their opposition, urging the UK government to enforce existing laws rather than favoring AI companies.

Difficult words: copyrighted (protected by law so others cannot copy), opt-out (to choose not to participate in something), symbolize (to represent an idea or meaning).

How could allowing AI companies to use copyrighted content without permission impact artists, and what does the silent album's 12-track studio noise convey about the future of music if current trends continue?
