New Delhi airport roof collapse – level 3

04-07-2024 07:00

Heavy rainfall and wind at New Delhi’s main airport on Friday caused a roof to collapse, killing one person and disrupting flights from a domestic terminal.

India’s aviation minister said the situation is under control, and the terminal building is closed for thorough inspection to prevent further incidents. New Delhi received 228.1 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, causing flight disruptions, metro station closures, blocked underpasses, and massive traffic jams. The city’s relief from the heat turned into chaos.

The roof collapse occurred at Terminal 1, used for domestic flights, months after a refurbishment project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Images online showed vehicles crushed under steel girders. All flights from Terminal 1 were canceled until early afternoon.

Difficult words: refurbishment (renovation), inaugurate (to officially open), girder (a large steel beam).
