Nigeria floods – level 2
04-06-2025 07:00
Heavy rain in northern Nigeria killed more than 150 people and destroyed the market town of Mokwa.
The flooding started after strong rain and washed away homes, roads, and bridges. Over 5,000 people now have no homes. The army and emergency teams are trying to help, but many people say they don’t have enough food or shelter. Some people are still looking for family members who got lost in the flood. The government is sending help, but people need more. People are afraid of disease and need water, food, and shelter. Many families lost everything, and they don’t know what to do next.
The rainy season is normal in West Africa, but scientists say climate change is making the rain much worse. They say that extreme weather will be more common in the future.
Difficult words: shelter (a safe place to stay), common (normal, usual).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why do scientists warn that extreme weather events will become more common in West Africa?
