People use too many antibiotics – level 1
27-01-2025 15:00
Antibiotics help people when they are sick. But using them too much is wrong. They stop working after some time, which is called resistance.
New tests can help. A finger-prick test shows if an infection is bad and if bacteria cause it. It is fast. It gives answers in 2–3 minutes. A throat swab is a soft material on a stick. A doctor uses it to get a sample from the throat. It finds some bacteria, like Group A Streptococcus. It helps doctors choose the right pills.
These tests may stop doctors from giving too many antibiotics. This can help people stay healthy. Scientists are studying these tests to see how they can work in different places. They can save many lives in the future.
Difficult words: finger-prick (making a hole in your finger to get some blood), cause (to make something happen), sample (a small part which shows what something is like).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the purpose of the finger-prick test and throat swab, and how might they contribute to reducing antibiotic resistance?
