Politicians and sports – level 3
27-10-2025 07:00
Physical fitness seems to be becoming an important image tool for politicians.
In Poland, President Karol Nawrocki’s gym videos showing him boxing and lifting weights have attracted wide attention. He follows a global trend of leaders showing athletic strength — from Putin’s judo to Obama’s basketball.
Some athletes, such as Vitali Klitschko or Arnold Schwarzenegger, have even successfully moved into politics. According to Professor Jacek Wasilewski from the University of Warsaw, physical power can help politicians appear strong and reliable, especially in uncertain times. People naturally associate a muscular body with safety and leadership. Wasilewski adds that modern politics is more emotional and visual, using images of fighters or heroes to connect with ordinary people.
While former Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s footballing image was seen as friendly, Nawrocki’s boxing projects determination and courage — traits that help him appear as a protector and leader.
Difficult words: muscular (having strong, well-developed muscles), determination (strong will to do something), courage (bravery).
