Rising sea levels – level 2

18-03-2025 07:00

NASA says sea levels rose more than expected in 2024. Scientists thought they would rise by 0.43 cm, but they increased by 0.59 cm. This happened because ocean water got warmer and more glaciers melted.

2024 was also the hottest year ever recorded, with temperatures 1.6°C higher than in the past. About two-thirds of the sea level rise happened because warm water expanded, and melting ice caused the rest. Some countries are trying to use clean energy, but others, like the US, are reducing climate rules. Scientists say countries need to work together to stop the problem. If temperatures keep rising, sea levels will go up even faster, which could be dangerous for people living near the ocean.

Difficult words: expect (to think or believe something will happen), melt (when ice or snow turns into water), expand (to get bigger).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What factors caused sea levels to increase by 0.59 cm instead of the expected 0.43 cm, and how did warm water and melting ice each contribute to this change?
