South Sudan Facebook and TikTok ban – level 3
03-02-2025 15:00
South Sudan has lifted its ban on Facebook and TikTok, which was imposed last week after videos allegedly showing the killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan went viral.
These videos sparked protests and violence throughout South Sudan. The National Communications Authority confirmed that the disturbing content has been removed from the platforms.
The director of the National Communications Authority emphasized that the violence caused by social media highlights the importance of regulating online content while protecting citizens’ rights.
Rights groups have accused the Sudanese army of carrying out ethnically-targeted attacks in El Gezira state following the army’s capture of the state capital, Wad Madani. The army, however, described the incidents as individual violations. These attacks, filmed and widely shared, contributed to the unrest.
South Sudan has now restored access to the platforms but continues to deal with the fallout of the violence fueled by the videos.
Difficult words: violation (breaking a law or agreement), unrest (disorder or trouble in society), fallout (the unpleasant results or effects of an action or event).

What was the reason for South Sudan lifting its ban on Facebook and TikTok, and what impact did the previously banned content have on the country?
