Sudan humanitarian crisis – level 3
07-03-2025 15:00
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has stopped giving food to Zamzam camp in Sudan because the fighting has become worse.
This camp, which is in the Darfur region, is home to around 500,000 refugees. The UN has warned that many people could die from hunger.
The war in Sudan started in April 2023 due to a conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In recent weeks, the fighting near Zamzam has become so intense that aid workers had to leave for their safety. Markets have burned, and people are struggling to survive.
Sudan is now facing the world’s worst hunger crisis. Half the population, about 25 million people, don’t know when they will eat again. Delivering food is difficult because of bad roads, many military checkpoints, and continuous attacks. The WFP is asking the international community to help by ensuring a pause in fighting so people can get some food.
Difficult words: paramilitary (unofficial force organized similarly to a military force), checkpoint (a place where people are stopped and vehicles are examined).
