Tanzania’s New President – level 2

24-03-2021 15:00

John Magufuli was the fifth president of Tanzania and he died on March 17, 2021.

Samia Saluhu Hassan became the new president. She became the first female president of Tanzania since 1961 when the country became independent from Britain.

In the past, Tanzanian leaders came from the mainland, and Hassan became the first president who came from Zanzibar. Zanzibar is a group of islands and it is an autonomous part of Tanzania.

Hassan’s style is very different from Magufuli who wanted to be popular with people, and he did not want to make big decisions. Magufuli did not solve problems with the coronavirus, and he said that the coronavirus was not too dangerous. Hassan must solve many problems now, and she must decide if the country will get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Difficult words: independent (not under the control of another country), mainland (the main part of a country or continent, without the islands around it), autonomous (when a country has its own government, and it can work without control by somebody else).
