Thieves steal famous paintings – level 3
03-04-2026 07:00
Four masked thieves have stolen millions of euros’ worth of art from the Magnani Rocca Foundation, a museum near Parma, Italy. The gang entered the villa on March 22 and took three famous paintings by Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse.
The entire heist was incredibly fast; it lasted only three minutes. Although the museum’s alarm system stopped them from taking more items, the thieves managed to escape before the police arrived. Experts are concerned that this might be a copycat crime following a famous robbery at the Louvre in Paris last year. Because the museum is located in the countryside, it was an attractive target for the criminals.
Art recovery specialists say that only 5% to 10% of stolen art is ever found. It is very difficult for thieves to sell famous paintings because the police and the media watch for them globally. This event has started a serious discussion about how to improve security in smaller, rural museums.
Difficult words: entire (all of something; the whole part of a thing), heist (a grand robbery, usually from a museum or bank), copycat (a person who does the same thing as someone else, or a crime that is an exact copy of a famous one).
