Three years of Russia-Ukraine war – level 3

03-03-2025 07:00

The war in Ukraine began when Russian forces invaded from multiple directions, expecting a quick victory. However, it has now entered its fourth year, bringing devastating consequences for both countries and the world.

The World Economic Forum estimates that 2.8 trillion dollars will be lost globally. Ukraine alone will need over 500 billion dollars to rebuild. Food and fuel prices have risen due to disrupted exports and reduced Russian gas supplies. The human cost has been enormous. The UN reports that 122,000 Ukrainian civilians have died, and 3.7 million are displaced. Around 45,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, with 390,000 injured. Russia has suffered over 750,000 casualties, including up to 172,000 deaths. Military losses include thousands of tanks, aircraft, and naval vessels.

Russia now controls 20% of Ukraine, including valuable mineral resources, but many occupied cities are heavily damaged. Meanwhile, most Ukrainian cities, despite continuous missile and drone attacks, remain functional. The war has reshaped global politics and economies, with no clear end in sight.

Difficult words: consequence (a result or effect, usually unwelcome or unpleasant), disrupted (stopped or changed something so it no longer works normally), casualty (a person killed or injured in a war or accident).
