US-Iran talks – level 3

27-05-2025 07:00

Talks between Iran and the United States restarted in Rome, Italy, to resolve long-standing disagreements about Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran’s Foreign Minister and Trump’s Middle East envoy are leading the fifth round of discussions. While the US wants to stop Iran from creating a nuclear weapon, Iran wants relief from economic sanctions. The situation is tense, and both sides have stated strong conditions for any agreement.

Iran’s nuclear program is moving quickly, and experts say Iran could soon have enough enriched uranium for a bomb. However, it is not certain whether Iran has the technical knowledge to build one. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can’t fully inspect Iran’s nuclear sites anymore, which increases global concern and makes the current talks in Rome even more important.

The US hopes for a peaceful solution but demands Iran stop supporting terrorism and end its nuclear ambitions. Although both sides are still negotiating, Iran’s supreme leader is final in any decision.

Difficult words: envoy (a person who is sent by one government to talk to another government), enriched uranium (a type of uranium that has been changed to make it more powerful), ambition (a strong desire to do or achieve something).
