USA wins men’s hockey Olympic gold – level 3
02-03-2026 15:00
The US men’s hockey team defeated Canada 2–1 in sudden-death overtime to win its first Olympic gold medal since the famous 1980 “Miracle on Ice.” It was only the second time the United States beat Canada in an Olympic gold medal game.
The match was intense, with NHL stars on both sides, many of them normally teammates in the same professional league. Canada outshot the US 42-28, but American goalie Connor Hellebuyck delivered an outstanding performance. After the game was tied 1–1 at the end of regular time, 24-year-old Jack Hughes scored the winning goal in three-on-three overtime. Hughes had earlier lost teeth after he got hit in the face, but he continued playing.
This victory also marks the first time both the US men’s and women’s hockey teams are Olympic champions at the same Games. Meanwhile, Norway finished first in the overall medal count. The US placed second.
Difficult words: sudden-death (extra time in a game where the first team to score wins immediately), goalie (the player who protects the goal and tries to stop the other team from scoring), victory (a win).
