Almost 200 Venezuelan migrants who had entered the US were deported and have now returned to Venezuela. They had been detained at the US facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Human rights groups claim that they were denied legal assistance, but Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro insists that his government secured their release. The deportation process involved a complex transfer. A US plane flew them to Honduras, where a Venezuelan state airline completed the journey.

This marks the second US deportation of Venezuelans in a month. The US government claims that some deportees belonged to a Venezuelan criminal gang, but Venezuela denies this accusation. The first group of returnees was checked, and officials found no gang members among them. Those without pending criminal charges will be allowed to go home. The deportations reflect changing US-Venezuela relations, which had previously been tense under Trump’s administration but now appear more transactional. The future of Venezuelans still in the US remains uncertain.
