Vote in Polish parliament – level 3
16-06-2025 07:00
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has survived a vote of confidence in parliament, showing he still has the support of lawmakers.
This happened after the election of Karol Nawrocki, a right-wing nationalist, as the new president. Tusk said that his pro-European government has improved the country and that he wants to continue with his plans. However, experts say that Nawrocki, who supports the opposition, could block many of Tusk’s policies using his presidential veto.
Although Tusk won the vote, his government now faces many challenges. The president can stop laws, including those on judicial reform, civil rights, and other major issues. Tusk may find it almost impossible to bring the changes people voted for. He must now find new ways to communicate with voters and gain more public support, especially from young people.
The European Union supports Tusk and wants Poland to stay close to EU values. However, many fear that continued political tension will stop needed reforms. Tusk may need to change his team and political strategy soon.
Difficult words: vote of confidence (a vote showing that a majority continues to support the policy of a leader), veto (to officially say no to a law), reform (a change to improve something).

What obstacles might Tusk encounter when attempting to pass judicial reform, civil rights laws, and other major policies under President Karol Nawrocki’s veto power?
