Why women have menopause – level 1

Menopause is when women stop having babies.
Some animals, like orcas, also stop having babies. Most animals keep having babies until they die. But humans and orcas stop having babies earlier. Scientists think that this happens because humans live longer. But this is not true for orcas. Another idea is that having babies when older is dangerous. But it is not the main reason.
The best idea is called the grandmother hypothesis. This idea says that older women help families by taking care of grandchildren. This helps the family and is better than having more babies.
