World’s largest iceberg collision – level 1
28-01-2025 07:00
A big iceberg, A23A, is moving to South Georgia, an island with penguins and seals.
A23A breaks away from Antarctica in December. People are watching it with satellites to see if it will hit the island. If the iceberg blocks the water, animals like penguins and seals cannot find food. This happens before, and many animals die.
Scientists are studying the iceberg. They want to know how it changes the ocean. The iceberg starts breaking many years ago, so it is not because of climate change. But scientists think that more big icebergs may come in the future. A23A is dangerous for animals. At the same time, it helps scientists understand icebergs better.
Difficult words: iceberg (a big piece of ice which floats in the sea), block (to make the movement or flow difficult or impossible), climate change (the world getting hotter).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are the potential consequences for the penguins and seals if iceberg A23A blocks the water around South Georgia island, and how does this event contribute to scientists' understanding of icebergs?
