Zelenskyy and Trump meet – level 3

04-03-2025 07:00

On February 28, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss a minerals agreement.

The deal would have allowed the US to access Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, which are important for economic and strategic reasons. However, the meeting became tense when Zelenskyy warned Trump about trusting Russian President Vladimir Putin, reminding him that Russia had broken agreements before. Vice President JD Vance accused Zelenskyy of disrespect, and Trump ended the meeting suddenly.

After this, Trump said he would review US military aid to Ukraine, suggesting that Ukraine was not acting gratefully. Many European leaders showed support for Ukraine, saying Russia was the aggressor. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed their commitment to helping Ukraine. Despite the disagreement, Zelenskyy hoped to repair relations with the US and continue negotiations. This event showed growing tensions between the US and Ukraine.

Difficult words: strategic (important for a long-term plan), aggressor (a person or country that attacks another first), commitment (a promise to do something).

How did a warning about trusting Russia, an accusation of disrespect, and a reconsideration of military aid contribute to escalating tensions between the parties?
