How China deals with trash – level 3

20-05-2025 15:00

Zhangjiagang is an industrial city that uses advanced technology to treat household waste.

Instead of putting waste in landfills, the city uses incineration, a process where waste is burned in a smart and fully enclosed facility. This process creates electricity and heat that is reused in nearby factories. Thanks to this method, the city has entered a zero landfill era, where no household waste is buried in the ground.

The waste treatment center is very modern and clean. There is no bad smell or visible garbage. Everything is monitored and controlled through a central system. Even kitchen waste is burned together with regular waste to produce more energy. The plant produces enough electricity each year for around 60,000 households. After incineration, the remaining residue is not thrown away. Companies turn it into construction materials, and the steam produced during the process is piped to small businesses for daily use. Hazardous waste is also handled safely. Through technology and teamwork between companies, Zhangjiagang has created a full recycling system that protects the environment.

Difficult words: incineration (burning waste), residue (what is left after something is burned or removed), hazardous (dangerous or harmful).
