Ethiopia bitcoin mining – level 2

17-09-2025 07:00

Ethiopia now lets companies mine Bitcoin again. The country built a big dam, which makes a lot of electricity. But many people are still not connected to the power grid.

So the government sells the extra energy to Bitcoin miners. These companies pay big fees, which help build more power lines. Last year, they paid about 220 million dollars. The plan is to give electricity to everyone by 2030, but this is hard to achieve.

Mining Bitcoin in Ethiopia is cheap. It costs about 20,000 dollars, but one Bitcoin sells for more than 100,000. Therefore, Ethiopia is attractive for miners. In Europe, electricity is much more expensive. For now, Bitcoin is growing, and experts believe Ethiopia can become an important place for mining.

Difficult words: power grid (wires, cables, and stations which carry electricity from power plants to homes and businesses), attractive (something that makes people interested).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How do the fees paid by Bitcoin miners contribute to building more power lines in Ethiopia?
