First woman in France gets a life sentence – level 1

30-10-2025 07:00

A woman named Dahbia Benkired goes to prison for the rest of her life. She kills a 12-year-old girl, Lola, in Paris.

Dahbia is from Algeria. She lives in France without official documents. In court, she says little and looks cold. She is not sorry for the little girl. Many people in France are sad and angry. They talk about rules for people who come from other countries.

The judge says Dahbia cannot go out of prison. Maybe after 30 years, judges can look at her case again. Lola’s family is very sad and cries in court.

Difficult words: court (a place where people decide about a crime or another legal situation), cold (when somebody shows no feelings or kindness), judge (a person who decides in court).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How many years must pass before judges can reconsider Dahbia’s case?
