People must pay to see the Trevi Fountain – level 2

06-02-2026 07:00

Rome now asks tourists to pay 2 euros to get close to the Trevi Fountain. Visitors pay the fee to walk near the water and throw a coin. People can still see the fountain for free from the square above, and the city keeps the view open.

City leaders want fewer people near the fountain at the same time. Big crowds often cause problems like pickpocketing and fights. The city already uses lines and time limits, and officials say these rules help. Many people visit the fountain every year, especially in summer.

The fee works only during busy daytime hours; people can still get close to the fountain for free in the evening. The city uses the money to care for historic places. People who live in Rome don’t pay any fee. The city hopes this plan makes visits calmer and more respectful.

Difficult words: fee (money you pay for a service or to enter a place), pickpocketing (taking money from someone’s bag or pocket), respectful (when someone cares).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which group of visitors does not have to pay the fee to walk near the Trevi Fountain?
