People must pay to see the Trevi Fountain – level 3

06-02-2026 07:00

Rome now asks tourists to pay a small fee to get close to the Trevi Fountain.

From 2 February 2026, visitors pay 2 euros to walk down the steps near the water and throw a coin. People can still see the fountain for free from the square above, and the view stays clear for everyone.

The city wants visitors to show more respect for the monument. City leaders say the main goal is crowd control, not profit. The Trevi Fountain often gets too crowded, and problems like pickpocketing happen there. The city already tested lines and time limits, and officials say this system worked well. Around ten million people waited in line last year, with very busy days in the summer.

Tickets apply only during busy daytime hours, while late evening access stays free. The money will help care for historic sites and improve visits; however, Rome residents don’t pay the fee. City leaders say this plan supports better tourism and protects famous sites for the future.

Difficult words: monument (an old or important building or place), pickpocketing (stealing money from someone’s pocket or bag in a crowd), resident (a person who lives in a place).
