Cocaine use in Europe – level 1

19-06-2026 15:00

A new report shows that many people in Europe use an illegal drug called cocaine. Scientists test the wastewater in cities. They want to see where the problem is biggest. Spain and Belgium have the most drugs in their water.

The use of cocaine is growing very fast in the Spanish city of Barcelona. Another test asks people about drugs. It shows that Norway and the Netherlands have many young users.

This drug business is very dangerous and brings crime and violence. Bad people use small boats and drones to bring drugs to quiet beaches. Police are working hard to stop them. They recently catch a big group on the ocean and take away 11 tonnes of drugs.

Difficult words: illegal (against the rules), wastewater (dirty water from houses, toilets, and factories), violence (when you use force to hurt or kill someone).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which two countries had the most drugs in their water?
