A court in New Mexico gave Meta a big fine of 567 million dollars. The judge said Meta didn’t keep children safe on Facebook and Instagram. The court found that Meta knew about dangerous online harms but didn’t stop them.

Now, Meta must pay almost one billion dollars in total from this court case. Part of this money will help young people who were hurt by social media. Meta must also change its rules to protect children from dangerous AI chat tools. Meta says it works hard to keep teenagers safe and will try to change the judge’s decision.

Some people believe that big fines are necessary to force tech companies to protect children. Others think that parents and young people should learn to use the internet safely together instead of making strict new laws.

Difficult words: fine (money a person or company must pay for breaking a rule or law), in total (including everything or everyone when added together), force (to make someone do something they might not want to do).
