Meta must pay – level 3
13-08-2026 07:00
A court in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay a huge fine of 567 million dollars for failing to protect children on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
The judge called Meta a public nuisance, and explained that the company knowingly allowed child safety risks and sexual exploitation to harm young users and their families.
This new ruling brings Meta’s total fines in this major legal case to almost one billion dollars. In addition to paying money, Meta must change several policies, such as stopping children from using AI chatbots for adult conversations. Meta disagrees with the decision, claims it works hard to keep teenagers safe, and plans to appeal.
Experts compare this legal situation to past cases against big tobacco companies, and they expect that economic penalties will finally force tech companies to prioritize safety over profits. Meanwhile, experts continue to debate whether strict government regulations or parental guidance is the best way to protect young internet users today.
Difficult words: nuisance (something that causes harm, trouble, or danger), exploitation (using someone unfairly or harmfully for your own advantage or financial gain), prioritize (to put something first because it is the most important thing).
