Nuclear power plants do not have enough water – level 2

20-08-2026 07:00

Severe drought and hot summer weather have caused big problems in Europe. The water level in the Danube River is very low, so Romania had to stop its nuclear power plant because there was not enough cold water.

Nearby Hungary also had water problems at its nuclear plant. Hot weather makes people use more air conditioning, which needs a lot of electricity. Luckily, Hungary uses much more solar power now, which helped supply energy during hot daytime hours, but getting enough power during the night is still difficult.

Experts say that energy demand is growing because of electric cars and cooling systems. They warn that European governments must prepare better for extreme weather to keep energy, water, and food supplies safe for everyone in the future.

Difficult words: drought (a long period of time with little or no rain), air conditioning (a system used to cool down the air in a building or vehicle), supply (an amount of something people can use).
