The second edition of the World Humanoid Games kicked off in Beijing, China, and it is showing impressive technological progress in robotics.

During the five-day event, a humanoid robot named Lightning even broke Usain Bolt’s 100-meter sprint record, although it struggled to brake after the finish line. Droids also competed in boxing, table tennis, high jump, and household chores like folding laundry. Although advertised as an international event, over 95 percent of the competing companies are Chinese.

The games reflect a high-stakes global technology race between China and the United States. While China is currently leading in robotics innovation and using the spectacle as soft power, analysts emphasize that commercial success remains the ultimate goal. Participating companies must perform well to attract investors. The biggest challenge now is transforming these entertaining machines into useful, affordable household products that consumers actually want to buy for daily tasks.
