Making textile color without chemicals – level 3
31-08-2026 07:00
The fashion industry relies heavily on toxic petrochemical dyes that pollute oceans and damage ecosystems.
To solve this environmental crisis, the biotechnology company Colorifix has developed a sustainable way to produce dyes using nature instead of harmful chemistry.
By inserting natural genetic code into bacteria, the company ferments pigment in tanks through a process similar to brewing beer. The biological dye and biomass replace synthetic chemicals, which significantly reduces environmental impact. On polycotton fabrics, this method saves up to 77 percent of water, 51 percent of energy, and 31 percent of carbon emissions.
The company tests all dyes for safety to make sure they don’t cause skin irritation or allergies. Their products are durable against sunlight and washing, which makes them attractive to major fashion brands. It now ships ready-to-use dye concentrates globally and proves that high-performance textile colors can be produced cleanly without depending on fossil fuels.
Difficult words: petrochemical (a chemical substance made from oil or natural gas), ferment (to change a substance using natural microorganisms like bacteria or yeast), polycotton (a blended fabric made from a mix of polyester and natural cotton).
