Icelanders have voted against resuming membership talks with the EU in a national referendum. With almost all votes counted, 52.5% of voters rejected the government’s proposal to restart negotiations, while 47.5% supported it.

Prime Minister’s government had brought the vote forward due to global geopolitical tensions; however, international issues didn’t dominate the debate. Political experts explained that the NO campaign successfully focused on domestic identity, national independence, and protecting Iceland’s fishing waters. In contrast, the YES campaign ran a very technical campaign that failed to excite the public.

Even though the referendum was only about reopening preliminary discussions rather than deciding on actual EU membership, voters chose to protect their sovereignty. This result stops Iceland’s path toward joining the EU for the near future.

Difficult words: dominate (to be the strongest, most important, or most noticeable part of something), debate (a formal discussion on a topic where people express different opinions), sovereignty (the power and right of a country to govern itself without control from outside).
