A shark in a canal – level 2

06-10-2026 07:00

A large 3.5-meter shark got stuck in a canal in Busan, South Korea, more than two weeks ago. People gave the shark the nickname Bukangi, and around 600,000 visitors came to see it.

Rescue teams tried to guide the shark back to the open ocean twice with the help of water jets and a large 50-meter net. The second rescue attempt failed on Friday because the net got caught on sharp rocks. Experts believe city noise and bright lights are confusing the shark, which finds it difficult to get into the sea. Rescue teams left a net barrier to stop it from swimming deeper into the city. They hope the ocean currents will help it swim out naturally.

Scientists say warmer sea waters are bringing more large sharks near South Korea.

Difficult words: water jet (a strong, fast stream of water pushed out with strong force), attempt (trying to do something difficult or achieve a goal), current (a movement of water flowing in a specific direction).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What methods did rescue teams use to guide the shark back to the open ocean, and why did the second attempt fail?
