A shark in a canal – level 3
06-10-2026 07:00
In Busan, South Korea, a 3.5-meter shark has been stuck in a narrow port canal for over two weeks after a second rescue attempt failed.
Rescuers tried using a massive 50-meter net to gently herd the animal back out toward the open ocean; however, the operation had to be called off when the net kept snagging on underwater rocks. The shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, has turned into a major local celebrity, and it drew roughly 600,000 visitors to the canal area. Marine experts think noisy surroundings and city lights might be confusing the shark’s senses and make it hard for the animal to navigate out on its own.
Rescuers have now positioned the net to keep the animal close to the sea. They hope changing tides will help it swim home. Meanwhile, researchers note that rising sea temperatures are driving significantly more large sharks toward South Korea’s coastlines.
Difficult words: herd (to gather and guide animals or people to move together in a specific direction), snag (to catch or get caught on something sharp or rough).
