Lithuania and nuclear weapons – level 2

13-10-2026 07:00

The parliament of Lithuania voted to start changing its constitution so it can allow nuclear weapons on its land in the future.

Lithuania made a law against nuclear weapons years ago when the Soviet Union ended. But today, leaders feel unsafe because Lithuania shares borders with Belarus and Kaliningrad, where Russia keeps nuclear weapons. US President Donald Trump recently said he might build a permanent American military base in Lithuania, which Lithuanian leaders fully support to stay safe.

In response, Russia threatened to aim its nuclear weapons at Lithuania if foreign warheads arrive. Lithuanian leaders say they are ready to protect their country and stay strong with their NATO allies.

Difficult words: constitution (the basic laws of a country), permanent (something what lasts for a long time), aim (to point a weapon at a specific target).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why do Lithuanian leaders feel unsafe?
