No more horses in the streets of New York – level 2
27-10-2026 15:00
New York City is planning to ban horse-drawn carriages in Central Park by June 2028. Animal rights groups criticized the carriages for years and said the horses work in unsafe conditions alongside cars.
Support for the ban grew stronger after a tourist died in an accident involving a carriage. While the city mayor supports the new law, drivers and union workers are fighting against it. They say the carriages are a famous tradition from the 1800s and that the ban will destroy many jobs. The city plans to help workers transition and promises that the horses will not be killed.
While some tourists will miss the classic rides, many people believe it is time to stop using horses for entertainment.
Difficult words: union (an official organization of workers formed to protect their rights and interests), transition (the process or period of changing from one state or job to another), entertainment (activities provided for people to enjoy).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What reasons do drivers and union workers give for fighting against the ban?
