2024 Doomsday Clock – level 1

The Doomsday Clock stays at 90 seconds to global catastrophe. It is the closest ever to midnight.
This is bad news for all people. There are many risks. Wars make the world unstable, mainly the war in Ukraine and Gaza. There are other conflicts in the Middle East. Leaders do not speak about nuclear weapons enough. Countries do not do enough to slow climate change. Artificial intelligence may be dangerous, too.
Once again, scientists ask leaders to do more for the planet. They worry that the United States will take part in Middle East wars. The planet will get even warmer. We must do something now.
Difficult words: global catastrophe (an event which hurts people in the world), risk (when something bad may happen), artificial intelligence (computer systems which can do things people do).
