A court bans a Russian newspaper – level 1

13-09-2022 07:00

Novaya Gazeta is a Russian newspaper. It is independent. Independent is when no government controls it.

In March, Novaya Gazeta stops its work in Russia. Officials say that Novaya Gazeta doesn’t write the truth about the war in Ukraine. Last week, a court bans Novaya Gazeta in Russia. Russian officials block its work in Europe, too.

Dmitri Muratov is the boss of Novaya Gazeta. He says that he doesn’t understand the ban. The court says that Novaya Gazeta doesn’t have some papers from 2006.

Muratov says that the ban is political. Novaya Gazeta will ask another court to check the situation again. Muratov believes nothing will change.

Difficult words: control (to have power over someone or something), ban (to officially stop something), political (something that powerful people want rather than something that is good).
