A lab in Spain can clone your pet – level 3
04-02-2025 15:00
Despite its high cost of 55,000 euros, pet cloning is becoming more popular in Spain.
Christian Morales, a 33-year-old from Barcelona, lost his beloved French Bulldog, Lola. He preserved her DNA in a laboratory to keep the possibility of seeing her again. Although he hasn’t decided to clone her yet, he hopes that prices will become more affordable in the future.
A lab in southern Spain, which previously focused on cloning expensive horses, now offers cloning services for dogs and cats. Scientists explain that cloned pets are nearly identical to the original in appearance and behavior. However, psychologists argue that cloning cannot bring back a pet’s consciousness or memories, meaning owners still experience grief.
Despite ethical concerns, demand for pet cloning remains strong, with many owners seeking to bring back their beloved animals. Christian continues paying 500 euros a year to store Lola’s DNA, imagining a future where he can again have a version of his childhood pet.
Difficult words: cloning (creating an exact copy of a living thing), consciousness (awareness and thoughts of a living being).
