A strange problem at the Olympics – level 3

10-02-2026 15:00

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy have started; however, a strange problem has taken attention away from records and medals.

Anti-doping officials are closely watching ski jumpers because some athletes may be trying to change their body shape in an unusual way.

Reports say a few ski jumpers inject substances such as hyaluronic acid into their genitals to make them temporarily larger. They believe this can improve aerodynamics and help them jump farther. In ski jumping, body shape and balance are extremely important. Even very small changes can affect air flow and distance. Research shows that a change of just two centimeters can add several meters to a jump, which can decide who wins.

The sport already has a history of cheating, including suit tampering at the 2025 World Ski Championships. Officials now worry that injections are harder to detect, which raises serious concerns about fairness and trust in the Olympic Games.

Difficult words: anti-doping (rules and checks to stop athletes from using illegal drugs to win), genitals (private parts of the body used for sex or reproduction), aerodynamics (how air moves around objects).

What advantage do ski jumpers hope to gain by injecting hyaluronic acid into their genitals?
