Amazon and US tariffs – level 2
02-05-2025 15:00
Amazon said it is not planning to show the cost of tariffs on its website. A news story said Amazon would tell people how much import taxes add to prices.
This made the White House angry, but Amazon said it only talked about this idea for Haul, a small part of the company that sells cheap goods from China. But the company never agreed with the plan.
Amazon’s stock price went down after the news, but later went up again. President Trump talked to Jeff Bezos and said Bezos fixed the problem fast.
Some people, like Senator Schumer, want big stores to show real costs. Others, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, liked the idea of seeing tariffs. Trump wants more US goods in shops and less from China. He made new rules to stop cheap Chinese products from coming in easily.
Difficult words: tariff (a tax on things from other countries), add (to put something extra in), stock (a small piece of a company which people can buy).
