Brazil school attack – level 3

10-04-2023 15:00

At least four children were killed after a man armed with a small axe attacked a preschool in the city of Blumenau in southern Brazil.

Police allege that the 25-year-old man gained access to the private school by scaling its walls. He turned himself in to the police after the rampage. The attacker had a history of violence and drugs, and according to police, he stabbed his grandfather in March 2021.

Community members living near the school came to lay flowers and pay their respects to the young victims. In a Twitter post, President Luiz Inacio da Silva said that such a tragedy was unacceptable and an absurd act of violence against innocent and defenseless children.

The attack comes a week after a 13-year-old student stabbed a teacher to death and wounded five others in Sao Paulo.

Difficult words: scale (to climb up or over), rampage (violent and uncontrollable behavior), absurd (illogical and unreasonable).
