Can Europe be without Visa and Mastercard? – level 2
09-03-2026 15:00
Most people in Europe use Visa or Mastercard for card payments.
These are American companies, and EU leaders think this creates a problem because Europe depends on foreign systems for payments. They want a new European system.
Wero is a digital wallet made by European banks. It uses direct bank transfer instead of a card network. This can lower fees and keep payment data in Europe. Many people in Germany, France, and Belgium already use it.
Leaders say Europe needs more control over the payment system. They also want lower costs for shops and customers. They believe the payment system is important infrastructure and Europe should manage it.
Difficult words: payment (giving money to buy something), foreign (from another country), direct (straight, without anyone in the middle).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How does Wero’s use of direct bank transfers lower fees and keep payment data in Europe?
