Cat café – level 2

26-07-2021 07:00

In June, Giovanna Molinaro opened a cat café in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The first cat café opened in Taiwan in 1998, and cat cafés quickly became popular in Asia. Cat owners could come there with their pets and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Rio’s Gato Café is different. Customers enjoy their coffee while cats lie lazily in another room. The place serves lattes with cat silhouettes and biscuits which look like paws.

The Gato Café is also a place for abandoned cats which people rescue. In 2019, there were over 78 million cats and dogs in Brazil. When owners died, and the coronavirus brought problems to many families, thousands of cats and dogs ended up in the streets.

Difficult words: silhouette (the shape of something without any details in it), paw (a cat or dog’s foot), abandon (to leave behind without care and help).
