Climbers break speed record – level 3
22-04-2025 07:00
Nicolas Hojac from Switzerland and Philipp Brugger from Austria broke a long-standing climbing record in the Swiss Alps.
On April 5, they climbed the North Faces of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains in only 15 hours and 30 minutes. This was nearly 10 hours faster than the previous record, which had stood for 21 years. The original record was set in 2004 by two other Swiss climbers, Ueli Steck and Stephan Siegrist. Hojac said the new record felt surreal, and they had only hoped to finish in 19 to 21 hours. He was surprised and proud that they had completed it so much faster. This shows that people are often able to do more than they think.
The two climbers began their journey at 1 AM and reached the Eiger summit in under six hours. Brugger shared that they had planned the project for a year, but a serious health problem had delayed it. Still, he recovered and managed to reach the Jungfrau with Hojac.
Difficult words: surreal (strange and hard to believe), summit (the top of a mountain).
