Driving in the EU at 17 – level 2

23-04-2025 07:00

The EU wants to make roads safer, and one idea is to let 17-year-olds drive cars.

They can do this if an adult with a license is with them. These young drivers will have two years with special rules. If they drink and drive, the punishment will be harder.

Driving tests will also change. They will check if people see dangers like pedestrians and bike riders. Health checks are also part of the new rules. Some countries will ask for doctor visits, others may ask drivers to check their health.

The EU will also bring a digital driver’s license by 2028. But people can still use a paper one. Some people worry about hackers, but EU leaders say the digital system will be safe.

Difficult words: punishment (a penalty), pedestrian (a person walking rather than traveling in a vehicle), license (a paper or card which says that you can do something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What types of hazards will the revised driving tests check for under the EU’s new rules?
